SB 1383 is a California law designed to reduce organic waste in landfills and recover
edible food for people instead. The state’s goals include reducing organic waste sent to
landfills by 75% and recovering 20% of edible surplus food.
Food and other organic materials produce methane when they decompose in landfills.
Composting, recycling, and food recovery help reduce these emissions while keeping
valuable resources out of the landfill.
SDSU has implemented programs to divert organic waste from landfills, including an
office composting program that collects food scraps from participating campus
departments. SDSU's Office of Energy & Sustainability identifies this program as part of
the university's ongoing efforts to comply with SB 1383.
